Meditation?

Meditation is a word that has come to be used loosely and inaccurately in the modern world. That is why there is so much confusion about how to practice it. Some people use the word meditate when they mean thinking or contemplating; others use it to refer to daydreaming or fantasizing. However, meditation (dhyana) is not any of these.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the practice of turning your attention to a single point of reference while achieving an altered state of consciousness, similar to Self-Hypnosis. It can involve focusing on the breath, on bodily sensations, or on a word or phrase known as a mantra. In other words, meditation means turning your attention away from distracting thoughts and focusing on the present moment. Meditation allows the mind to be at rest. Meditating is deceptively simple. It's not so serious either, as the metaphor below explains:
Two monks are sitting side by side, meditating. The older monk is in a total state of peace. The younger one is giving, the older one a quizzical look, to which the older one responds, "Nothing happens next. This is it."

20 scientifically proven ways how meditation can help you?

I started meditating after a very disturbing incident that was preventing me from sleeping. I was in the Middle East, at an extremely chaotic time to say the least. And I realised I had no control over my external environment. But the one place I did have a say over was my mind, through meditation. When I started meditating, I did not realize it would also make me healthier, happier, and more successful. Having experienced the benefits, I became a strong advocate and have helped hundreds of people to start meditation practices and advised probably thousands. Over the past decade, hundreds of studies have been carried out and published. Here are 20 reasons validated by science and research that might encourage you to get on the bandwagon today.

20. Meditation Makes You WISE/R

It gives you perspective: By observing your mind, you realize you don't have to be a slave to its whims. You realize it throws tantrums, gets grumpy, jealous, happy and sad but that it doesn't have to run you. Meditation is quite simply mental hygiene: clear out the junk, tune your talents, and get in touch with yourself. Think about it, you shower every day and clean your body, but have you ever showered your mind? As a consequence, you'll feel more clear and see things with a greater perspective.

We don't always have control of what happens to us externally, but we do have a say in what happens internally.
No matter what's going on, when your mind is at peace everything else follows.
Incidentally, you don't have to learn how to tie a knot in your legs before you can meditate your way to greater health :)
